It started out fine: we cleaned up our room (suspecting the Israeli couple would be moving in to the non-squeaky bed before our footprints were even cold) and Ole dropped us off at the bus station. Hugs at the side of the road and this lovely man even waited for our bus to pull away from the curb, waving at us as we drove away. As we drove South through the hills we felt very content…

7:45 – Alarm goes off. Hit snooze.
8:00 – Front door opens, waking us again. The Caravan People are coming in for breakfast.
8:05 – Join The Other Sarah in the kitchen. She has early duty serving breakfast for guests so is up first. Make some greek yogurt + muesli for Marc and I for breakfast. Start kettle for tea. Wrestle with European coffee-making contraption. Light gas stove with match. Lose one eyebrow.
The birthday fun continues as I have used my “Only Birthday Wish” to convince Marc to rent a tandem bike with me this morning.
Is it just me, or is the tandem bike THE preeminent RTO (Romantic Transportation Option) for Europe. Forget trains through the countryside (passengers gazing out as the fields pass by, glasses of champagne in their hands and feet tangled together in the small space under the dining car table) or boats (lovers being paddled down the canals of Venice, kissing as they pass under bridges to the general applause of the tourists above) – no, it’s tandem bikes all the way! A little hustle and we all made it through the back alleys of Sintra to our private wine tasting with Vera. We tried about half a dozen different cheeses and meats made in the region. The best was the marinated sheep’s cheese. Yes – marinated. Why aren’t more people doing this?!?! It was in a vacuum sealed bag as chunks of hard cheese sitting in olive oil with rosemary, peppers and garlic. WHAAATTT. Continue reading
Time to eat because eating is good and that’s what life is for. Diogo took us down the road to an out-of-the-way place that the locals like (the best type) to have some traditional Portuguese food (or in Marc’s case: calamari – because we can’t pass that up when its on a menu). I had something described to me as “rice cooked with the gravy from duck stew” – YES PLEASE – and others enjoyed Bacalhau. Plus beer. Continue reading
Back on the bus with full and satisfied tummies, and down the road out of Lisbon proper and on to Cascais. According to Diogo, our guide, this is where Johnny Dep lives. This may or may not be true, but it became a “thing” to find Johnny’s house for the rest of the day (I’ll post a picture of his house later, we did end up there).
When we pictured Southern Spain, we thought we would be at a beach every day, but in fact today is the first day we went to the sea. Continue reading

Marc said we can “do whatever Hillary wants” today. Ye shall regret this!
Here’s what I want to do: go on a tour to a bunch of places in Lisbon, then have a nice dinner together.
I’m not usually a tour person when traveling. They can be expensive and end up taking the fun out of choosing your own path through the day. However, in this case we really only have one full day in Lisbon and that’s a pretty short time to get everything done. Plus, it’s nice to have a driver to take you around when it’s your special day and you are a Princess so you can do what you want!! Continue reading
The actual travel is the most stressful part of a trip, because you actually aren’t traveling every day even if you plan to cover a good part of the globe in a year. The best part, the part we look forward to the most, and the feeling we are reaching out for when we set off, is when you stay in one foreign place long enough for it to feel like home.
So, those days that are all about meeting deadlines and hustling through airports are actually the worst bit.
